In a recent interview with Esquire U.K., pop star Rihanna got in a heated exchange with a reporter over her decision to work with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown on the remix to her song “Brithday Cake” and his “Turn Up The Music.” The conversation stemmed around the fact that Rihanna was surprised people found it shocking that she would work with Brown, with whom she had been involved in a domestic abuse incident in 2009.
.
“The whole thing caught me a little off-guard to be honest … especially the amount of … negative attention,” she said. “Because it never occurred to me how this was going to be a problem. It really didn’t.” She went on to add, “I thought people were gonna be surprised that we finally did a record together, but I didn’t see how people could think it was a bad thing. In my mind, it was just music.” . Rihanna clarified that perhaps she could understand people’s frustration if she had started dating Brown again. “OK. In a completely professional environment. And on a complete professional note. I mean, if I went back to him [as a girlfriend], then that’s a whole different discussion,” she said. “And if I ever do, then that’s something that y’all have to talk to me about when — if — that ever happens. Until then, look at it for what it is.”
.
Now, we aren’t one to tell musicians what they can and cannot do. But the fact that Rihanna doesn’t see how people could be upset by her decision to work with Brown after he brutally assaulted her is mind-blowing. Yes, music is music. But by working with Brown she is essentially sending the message that she has forgiven him. And to that end, it is sending a terrible message to young girls everywhere that men can be forgiven after committing such an atrocious act of violence. Furthermore, it makes Rihanna appear to be solely concerned with money, as it is highly likely she thought that working with Brown would be a financially-lucrative decision.
