Mission to Lars – review

- Worth your time, as well as your cash, this is a film with rare honesty and nuanceWorth your time, as well as your cash (profits go to Mencap), Mission to Lars chronicles Kate and Will Spicer's road trip round America with their brother, Tom, in pursuit of Lars Ulrich – the dinky Danish drummer from Metallica. It's a challenge, not just because Metallica aren't easy to meet, but because Tom, now 40, has Fragile X Syndrome; "a sort of autism with bells on" in Kate's words. The peripheral interviews with the extended Spicer family are as compelling as the central quest; this is a film with rare honesty and nuance in a field that frequently feels queasy.Rating: 3/5DocumentaryMetallicaAutismCatherine Shoardguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
