Returning Show Report Card: “Falling Skies”
.
“Falling Skies” returns to TNT this Sunday for the long-anticipated second season. The show follows a band of survivors in the aftermath of an alien attack that seems to have left most of the world incapacitated. A few resistance militia groups are formed, and we follow the plight of the 2nd Mass. The aliens are interested in harnessing (literally) the children of Earth. Their ultimate purpose is still the big question.
In the first season we saw a ragtag group of refugees come together to form the 2nd Mass, a military resistance unit fighting the alien invasion. While the group formulates a plan for survival under the leadership of Captain Weaver (Will Patton), the aliens are capturing human children for unknown purposes. A couple of the children are liberated from the aliens, including the son of historian Tom Mason (Noah Wyle), the second in command. Along the way they join forces with the rebellious John Pope (Colin Cunningham), who turns out to be an asset to the group. We left the season with Mason agreeing to go onto an alien ship in exchange for the safety of his youngest son.

In the season two two-part opener, things pick up three months after the season one finale. We lose some cast members from the previous season, which is kind of a bummer, but what can you do? We also see the return of Tom Mason, although since he’s been gone for so long, he comes under suspicion from several quarters. Through flashbacks, we get to see some of what happened during his time with the aliens and how he escaped. We also get our first look at what is presumably the alien “boss,” which is neither a skitter nor a mech. And with the 2nd Mass pushing into offensive mode against the aliens, TNT has given us more aliens, more action, and more opportunities for budding romance (which we also get to see).

Strength of the Season Premiere – B+
One has to wonder why TNT chose such a long interval between season one and season two. It’s been over a year since the first season’s finale, and much has changed. The removal of several key cast members (including Mpho Koaho, who played one of the infected children) is disappointing. However, bringing back Tom Mason and giving us some doubts as to his reliability adds yet another questionable element to the show, keeping the mystery alive. Combine this with budding romances and more interaction / action with the aliens and things look okay.

Likelihood to be Loved by Returning Fans – A-
Those fans who remember the first season will be happy the show is returning, and pleasantly surprised at the heavier alien action element.
.
Potential of Season to Come – A+
If TNT doesn’t screw this up, season two of “Falling Skies” could easily become the best sci-fi show currently on television (what else is there with “Fringe” scheduled for its final season?). More aliens, more action, more romance, and more mysteries. In my book, these are all more reasons to watch the show each week.
