‘Awkward.’ Season Premiere Recap: Jenna Found Love in a Mattyless Place?
MTV
.
Last we left our not-so-together heroine, she had realized that her mother was the one who wrote the letter heard round the world. As a new season begins, Jenna and Jake are on the wannabe fast track to love, but with the Matty memories looming, Ms. Hamilton is not so sure.
It’s Christmas, and Jenna is trying to immerse herself in the holiday spirit. But the knowledge of mommy dearest’s letter dooms her to be doubtful of her motherly love, despite the diamond stunner that she presents to her on Christmas day, with the sentiment of how precious she is. Really, mom? So precious that you’d write some hate mail? Color us unconvinced. Jenna’s keeping things mum (pun intended) about the letter’s origins, because she’s not quite ready for everyone to jump on the mom-hating train.
.
New Year’s Eve looms, and Tamara is sure that some spit-swapping is in the cards. Jenna has evolved; now ready to consider herself not “the girl who tried to kill herself” but “the girl with a date on New Year’s Eve.” But with a slew of anonymous blog comments, she can’t shake the feeling that maybe things aren’t quite easy breezy. Jake’s ready to be Online Official, but becoming a digital item isn’t quite on Jenna’s agenda. She corners Matty McKibben at his NYE shindig, determined to seek closure. But he’s not having it. He wants another shot. And because he’s beyond dreamy, we’re willing to give him that chance. But is Jenna? He’s ready to come clean to Jake, and plots a rendezvous with Jenna at midnight.
.
Meanwhile, Gal Pal Val is having a life crisis. She’s been stood up by Alook, and is in full-on breakdown mode. Jenna gives the advice perhaps Val’s judgment against her past (an ex who made “silly” excuses like getting a bump on the head and needing to go to the hospital) and realizes that maybe her past is holding her back. But from what?
.
Midnight strikes, and while Tamara is getting sloshed on something out of a Solo cup, Matty is left hanging, as Jenna and Jake share a midnight smooch that all but solidifies their budding romance. Sadie swoops in on the downtrodden Matty, dubbing Jake the “Nilla Wafer,” which is the greatest nickname ever. She admits her longtime crush on the hottie, and in a strange turn of events, the two are quickly macking down pretty hard. But, as keg beer will do, it hits Matty quite suddenly, and he’s passed out before things get too crazy.
.
Now that she has given him the NYE green light, Jenna reveals to Jake that she’s done the deed before. But she won’t reveal the lucky possessor of her V-card. She’s sure he’ll bolt, but he stays, and poor Jenna “Hameltoe” (Sadie wins at nicknames, really) is stuck in her love triangle for a bit longer. And with that, we’ve begun another season of one of TV’s most cleverly real teen dramadies. Are you ready for the new season of Awkward.?
