Jena Malone Offered Role of Johanna Mason in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

In one of the most hotly-contested casting decisions since, well, Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire may have finally found its Johanna Mason. The ax-carrying badass is a former winner of the Games, and she faces off against Katniss in the upcoming sequel (notably stripping her clothes off when they first meet in order to freak Katniss out and get inside her head). Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska and model-turned-actress Zoe Aggeliki were rumored for the role, and then Donnie Darko star Jena Malone entered into consideration, leaving fans wondering exactly what direction the casting directors would take. Word then came out that Aggeliki was the frontrunner for the part, but now THR reports that an offical offer has gone out to Malone for the part. Whew, that’s a lot of switching around.

Malone seems to be a good fit for Johanna, since she has far more experience than Aggeliki and can easily handle the drama necessary from this part. She’s also got some battle skills, as seen in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, so swinging that ax of hers should be no problem at all. Keep in mind that Malone hasn’t actually signed on yet, only that the offer has gone out, so there’s still a tiny chance that something could fall through and someone else could end up in the arena for the next two Hunger Games movies. But since Jena worked so hard to get this role, I’m guessing we’ve found our Johanna Mason. What do you think about the casting choice? ...
