Dream Syndicate live report: Bloom, Mezzago, Italy

On May 29, a sold out Bloom celebrated the memory of a sound and an iconic band: the Dream Syndicate. But the kings of Paisley underground are far from the nostalgic trip and they get on stage with a sardonic grin on their faces, like saying "Here we are again, we know we've got you, but we don't take ourselves too seriously".

Wynn and his mates, actually, are the rulers of the evening even before playing a single note: everyone is there for them, ready to sing all the choruses and to bang their fist in the air. So the openers Cheap Wine (performing an unusual acoustic set) despite their talent and passion, go almost unnoticed.
Dream Syndicate begin with a symbolic cover of blind Lemon Jefferson's “See that my grave is kept clean”: like a fist hitting you straight on the face... everything is clear from the first seconds: the band is going to kick hard and they don't want no prisoners tonight.
Wynn, sporting a suit and a t-shirt, with his Tele, plays with the audience and makes everyone sing; he tells jokes between songs showing the showmanship learnt in many years spent on stages all over the world.

Dream Syndicate in 2013 are a well oiled, ironic and well aware war machine: they know how to offer a great concert, playing all the favourites (with many encores). Best moment of the whole show: a merciless "John Coltrane stereo blues". Amazing.
