Passenger’s 10th birthday gift to UK indie Essential is first Platinum single

Essential Music & Marketing, the British independent distributor/labels-services provider, and Canadian indie label Nettwerk have been driving high up the UK sales charts with Passenger’s current single Let Her Go.

The track, by the UK folk-rock act fronted by singer Mike Rosenberg, has been declared a Platinum single after selling more than 600,000 digital-only units. It is also the first Platinum single for Essential since its launch 10 years ago.

It remains in the Official Charts Company’s (OCC) Top 10 this week (No. 6 today) after a 16-week run and having peaked at No. 2 so far.

Other achievements include being an iTunes’ single of the week, and topping Spotify’s UK chart with over 9.5 million UK Spotify streams (and 67 million worldwide). That amounts to an average of 43,000 UK plays daily since its October 2012 release.

On YouTube, Let Her Go has had more than 8 million views in the UK and 54 million globally. And the album, All The Little Lights, is currently No. 3 on the OCC album chart and been a Top 10 hit for nine weeks.

Moreover, nine of Essential’s leading 10 earning videos on YouTube for the month of June were from the All The Little Lights album.
In Ireland’s IRMA charts, Let Her Go also hit the No. 1 spot while the album reached No. 2. Nettwerk, which sealed a UK/Ireland distribution/marketing deal with Essential in October 2013, has been happy with the strategy for Passenger. This has included numerous plays for Let Her Go at leading UK music-radio outlets, including the Absolute Radio and Bauer Media stations, plus the BBC’s Radio 1.
Charlie Larby, general manager of Nettwerk UK, said in a statement: “Essential’s collective efforts have been pivotal in achieving the Platinum single and Gold album status for Passenger in the UK & Ireland. Their commitment has been unwavering.”

Essential managing director Mike Chadwick added: “The team here have worked unremittingly with Nettwerk to continuously build the single and album at every available juncture, the sort of tactical, bespoke campaign we do well. That this has now resulted in our first ever platinum single is the best 10th birthday present we could have wanted.”
