UK’s AIM indie music awards announce winners for 2013

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the duo from Seattle that have wowed international music fans with electronic-hip hop fusion, were the only act to walk away with two prizes at last night’s AIM Independent Music Awards in London.

They were acclaimed as the Independent Breakthrough of the Year and hailed as the Most Played New Independent Act at the event, which is now in its third year and was held at London-based venue The Brewery.

Otherwise, a ceremony that featured performances by Scotland’s favorite indie rockers Franz Ferdinand (signed to Domino Recording Company) and the ever reliable Billy Bragg (signed to Cooking Vinyl) was very egalitarian in the way the gongs were shared. Everyone else walked away with one award each.

Independent Album of the Year went to English folk act Daughter (signed to 4AD and Glassnote Records), while Diane Young, by US rock band Vampire Weekend, snapped up Independent Track of the Year.

Indie-label stalwart Warp Records’ 24 years in the business was recognized with the Independent Label of the Year, and Alcopops! Records nabbed the Best Small Label award.

London-based indie-pop act and Mercury Music Prize winners The xx went on stage to pick up the Best ‘Difficult’ Second Album for Coexist. The album hit the Top 10 in 26 countries, including No. 1 on Nielsen Soundscan’s US Independent Albums chart, the UK Album Chart, in Ireland, Portugal, New Zealand, and the Top 5 in all the major music markets.

The evening ended with Geoff Travis, co-founder of the Rough Trade Record Shop outlets and the label, receiving the Pioneer Award. The accolade acknowledged his innovative work in the business, while Billy Bragg received the equally prestigious gong for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

The remaining awards were for the:-

Best Live Act: Enter Shikari

Special Catalog Release Of The Year: Various Artists - Scared To Get Happy: A Story of Indie Pop 1980-89

Independent Video Of The Year: Django Django - ‘WOR’

Indie Champion Award: Gilles Peterson at BBC Radio 6 Music

The ceremony was organized and hosted by UK trade body AIM, the Association of Independent Music.
