Nelson Mandela is dead. He was 95 and he had been battling with illnes for a long time.
The Nobel Prize winning activist (he was awarded with the Nobel for peace in 19993) always had many supporters in the music world - and many artists celebrated him, during the years, with songs.
In 1984 Jerry Dammers wrote - for The Specials - the song "Free Nelson Mandela"; in 1985 the supergroup Artists United Against Apartheid released "Sun City", a whole album featuring big names like Ringo Starr, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Keith Richards and Ron Wood.

In 1989 Simple Minds released "Mandela day" (emclosed in the EP "Ballad of the streets"), written for the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, the concert which took place in Wembley on June 11, 1988.

In 2000 Mandela sponsored the "46664" campaign for AIDS research, gathering artists like Peter Gabriel, Dave Stewart, Brian May, Roger Tylor, Bono, Zucchero, Bob Geldof, Robert Plant and many more. The first "46664 Concert" took place at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, on November 29, 2003.
