US indie labels command No.1 market share for master-recording sales

The US independent-labels sector commands the biggest market share of music sales in the country, according to the 2013 year-end data from Billboard’s study of SoundScan’s figures.

Their combined business is bigger than each of the major labels as Universal Music Group had 28.5%, followed by Sony Music Entertainment’s 22.3%, while Warner Music Group cornered 14%.

The figures indicate the indie labels saw their share of the US’ total recorded-music market jump two percentage points from 2012.

The figures are based on ownership of master recordings, not distribution, because the majors also distribute independent labels.

A2IM (the American Association of Independent Labels) says on its website: “This growing indie share is a sure sign that the diversity, creativity and resilience of independent labels are leading to significantly increased revenues.”

Some of the top-selling albums in 2013 included Mumford & Sons on label Glassnote, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore LLC), Taylor Swift (Big Machine), The Lumineers (Dualtone), Vampire Weekend (Beggars Group) and Five Finger Death Punch (Prospect Park).”
