YouTube's subscription service will be called "Music Key", screenshots leaked

The Android Police blog has gotten hold of a few screenshots of the upcoming YouTube music service.

It will be called YouTube Music Key and it will offer ad-free, offline playback “with your screen off” as well as an audio-only mode for $9.99 per month.

Perspective users will be able to benefit from a 30-day trial and the service boasts a 20-million strong catalogue. YouTube also maintains that it will include “concerts, covers and remixes” on the service, but it’s unclear how these will be selected given that much of that output on YouTube is unlicensed, or whether it managed to roll those into the contractual terms with labels.

And what about the relationship with Google Play Music All Access? The two services are likely to be interchangeable so that if you pay for one you can access the other, though it’s not too far-fetched to think that they may be somehow merged further into the future.

Although Google recently acquired Songza, there is no mention of a "radio" functionality yet, that may come with later versions.

It’s still unclear when YouTube Music Key will launch, Google is still in negotiations with a number of independent labels and faces a potential investigation by the European Commission following a complaint by European independent trade body IMPALA on its negotiation tactics.
