Shazam announces reaching 100m monthly active users on mobile devices

Shazam has hit quite a milestone this week as the company announced reaching 100 million monthly active users who tag songs and videos from their mobile devices.

This is a significant increase over last year - 34% - and shows that in spite of the company having been around for a number of years there is still a great deal of potential for growth.

Shazam in fact is getting a cool 13 million app downloads per month and is being used 20 million times per day.

The company’s CEO Rich Riley stated: “Shazam now delivers a deeper discovery and content experience for music and TV, with retail, cinema and more coming soon. Our rapid user growth and engagement demonstrates that consumers are hungry for an immersive mobile experience.”

The company is a well-known driver of music sales, current figures state that its music recognition feature drives 400,000 digital song sales per day, approximately 7% of all music downloads globally.

Shazam is obviously pushing hard on the advertising front and over 500 TV commercials have been Shazamable to date, allowing brands to provide consumers with an immersive second-screen environment.

The company has recently introduced a desktop application for Mac computers that continuously listens to your environment and to what is being played by your computer to identify relevant pieces of content. This has been described as “creepy” by some users but eliminating the need to actively seek out content may indeed be the key to further improve its engagement figures.
