Microsoft launches new app offering digital music discounts

Microsoft’s phones lack the “immediacy” of iTunes or even Google Play when it comes to purchasing music. To remedy this and to make people more aware of the Xbox Music store the company has launched a new app today called Microsoft Music Deals.

The app allows users to purchase 101 top albums for just $2 every Tuesday, as well as classic albums and debut albums (the latter will be just 99 cents).

Microsoft continues to pursue a dual strategy when it comes to music. Xbox Music sports a streaming music subscription service, which works very much like Spotify or Rdio and has free and premium options (the latter is called Xbox Music Pass).

At the same time - as shown by the app release - the company is aware that some consumers want to keep downloading MP3s, so it continues to offer MP3 sales on Xbox Music as well. Its Microsoft Music Deals app can be seen as an effort to those users to try out the service in the first place. Bringing “traditional” music consumers into the Xbox Music ecosystem could even be a first step for Microsoft to entice them to subscribe to an Xbox Music Pass.
