Electronic-music legends Orbital call it quits after 25 years

Orbital, the popular UK electronic dance-music duo, are splitting up after 25 years.

Comprising brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll, Orbital first came to the industry’s attention with Chime, a 1989 debut track that resonated with the rave scene at the time.

With their torch-lit glasses, they made an impression on the then burgeoning EDM sector, especially at festivals.

From Chime to their performance at the 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony, Orbital are an icon.

But they have now called it a day. Paul Hartnoll said in a statement: “Orbital had stopped working properly. We had a great four years since getting back together in 2008, but it was time to move on.”

He is scheduled to release a solo album called 8.58 next February, followed by a tour. He has also been busy collaborating with PJ Harvey and producer Flood to compose soundtracks for Peaky Blinders, the hit TV drama series on public broadcaster BBC TV.

Phil plans to continue as a DJ.

A sign of the respect and affection they gained in the music industry as a whole was seen last November. PRS for Music, the UK royalties-collecting society, honoured the duo with a special heritage-award plaque in recognition of their pioneering work in electronic dance music.
