Phil Hartnoll and José González join Essential Music’s latest line-up

Paul Hartnoll (pictured), one half of the pioneering EDM duo Orbital who split up recently after 25 years, has been snapped up by Essential Music & Marketing to handle his new project 8:58.

8:58 is Hartnoll’s first album since he and brother Phil, as Orbital, went their separate ways. 8:58, the name of his role as the artist behind the project as well as the name of the album and title track, is influenced by Hartnoll’s fascination with the theme of time.

The album comes out early next year and will be available in a variety of digital and physical formats, including CD, double 180 gram vinyl set, and a deluxe double CD package. It will be supported by a full UK tour later on.

Essential is covering distribution, sales and marketing worldwide, apart from North America, and the company will work directly with Hartnoll’s management company to coordinate the campaign.

The first single and album teaser 8:58 will feature an introduction by Cillian Murphy, the Irish movie star currently starring in the hit British TV drama series Peaky Blinders. Other guest appearances will include Robert Smith of The Cure, plus singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt.

Another deal announced by Essential is with UK independent label Full Time Hobby, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary. The agreement covers the UK and Ireland with Essential providing physical and digital distribution, and marketing services to Full Time Hobby and sister label Hassle Records.

Full Time Hobby’s current roster includes Timber Timbre, Tunng, Pinkunoizu, Smoke Fairies, Erland & The Carnival, and The Leisure Society. New recordings from the bands We Are The Ocean and Under The Influence will also appear in 2015 on Hassle.

A third Essential deal, covering digital/physical distribution and marketing within the UK and Ireland, is with independent Peacefrog Records. Peacefrog is releasing Vestiges & Claws, the first solo album in seven years from Swedish folk-pop singer-songwriter José González, in February.
