Scott Cohen (The Orchard) joins Psonar's board as non-executive chairman

Scott Cohen, co-founder and VP of International at global music distributor The Orchard, has joined Psonar’s board as non-executive chairman.

Psonar is a music streaming service that promises to deliver music to those who can’t afford to pay £9.99 for a monthly subscription. The service allows listeners to pre-pay for access and listen to music for one penny per track.

The company wants to serve those consumers who are willing to pay for the convenience of mobile access but do not want to pay more than what they consume. In fact the company’s site states that for those who consume less than 1,000 tracks per month the service is a better deal than paying £10 per month for Spotify.

Scott Cohen has over 25 years of experience in the music industry and got involved in the digital music distribution game back in 1997, way before the launch of iTunes. Cohen stated:

“Music consumption is changing radically Streaming is fast becoming the dominant consumption model and many, less affluent, music fans can’t afford subscription priced at £9.99 or $9.99 per month.  The alternative is either suffering the intrusive experience of ads or accessing pirated content. Psonar Pay As You Go music is a compelling alternative for younger music consumers in particular, and well-suited for developing countries where the PAYG model can provide affordable access to streaming music for millions of mobile users.”

Psonar’s CEO Martin Rigby stated that Cohen joining the company

“[…] is a strong endorsement of the Psonar pay-as-you-go music streaming model by a successful music industry entrepreneur”

Can Psonar succeed where others have struggled? it’s going to be a tough road ahead especially considering how tight the margins are with these kinds of services, but if the company can plan its expansion carefully and make the right partnerships there’s no reason why the service shouldn’t be able to find a market in the UK.
