7digital develops a spirited new Christian-music app

Rock group Casting Crowns and hip hop singer-songwriter tobyMac (pictured on app) are among the popular artists from the US Christian-music genre featured on a new US app powered by 7digital, the UK-based international digital-music service provider.

Launched yesterday, the Overflow Christian Music streaming app was commissioned by privately owned US company The Overflow. It is a subscription-funded on-demand service being released on iOS. The Android version follows shortly.

The app offers subscribers access to a catalogue of more than 370,000 songs in the Christian and Gospel genres, as well as related sub-genres.For $4.99 a month, users can also download songs, albums or playlists on to their device.

7digital and The Overflow claim the app is the “first and only unlimited, on-demand Christian and Gospel music service that allows users to listen to as many songs as they want anytime, online or offline”. Moreover, fans can use it to engage in devotionals (special spiritual readings) by the artists, who are practicing Christians.

Should anyone be tempted to believe Christian music is an idiosyncratic niche, they should think again. Experts estimate it generates more than $400 million a year in music sales in the US alone. And The Overflow's future plans include taking the app international.

In addition to tobyMac and Casting Crowns, other established US Christian-music acts include rock bands Skillet and Third Day as well as performer Chris Tomlin.

“The Christian community is quickly creating a buoyant market for digital services and there isn’t yet a streaming music service that caters to their needs,” 7digital CEO Simon Cole says. “The Overflow knows their audience well and can foster a great discovery experience through smart media partnerships and focused curation.”
