Next Big Sound's 2014 State Of The Industry Report

Next Big Sound's 2014 State Of The Industry Report

Music data analytics company Next Big Sound has unveiled its State of the Industry report for 2014.

The company reported tracking 434 billion fan interactions around the world in 2014, a 363% increase from 2012 and a 95% increase from 2013.

Total artist fans across all social networks, including Twitter followers and Facebook likes are over 17 billion.

Next Big Sound is now tracking over 200 different metrics on online activity for artists, and is able to spot trends like the explosions of Instagram and the “stall” of Twitter.

The numbers around SoundCloud are also interesting since the platform has seen a sharp increase in plays - 2.4 billion - but a sharp decline in the number of users that “follow” artists. This may simply signal a shift in focus in the company’s priorities but also shows that many users are streaming SoundCloud tracks as embeds on third party websites, and a key question mark will be how SoundCloud can bring those users back on its own site.

The report also goes on to shatter the myth that millennials are migrating away from Facebook en-masse, with 46% of the network’s traffic coming from 18 to 24 year olds.

Brands are a strong force in 2014’s music ecosystem and will continue to play a big part in the music industry for years to come, but when it comes to Fortune 100 companies Universal Music grabbed 57% of brand deals, with Independents and Warner at 15% and Sony at 13%. That may also be an inherent benefit of being owned by a huge multinational like Vivendi that is hedging its bets on its media and entertainment holdings.
