Spotify launches impressive “Touch Preview” feature for iOS users

Spotify today surprised iOS users by introducing a new feature called “Touch Preview” that doesn’t actually require for the app to be updated in the usual way.

The company accompanied the release with a blog post and short video to illustrate it (see below), but really this feature needs to be experienced to be fully understood.

Users can now hold their finger on an album or a playlist and instantly be transported inside it, being able to hear previews of all the tracks in a super-fun and ultra-responsive way.

As long as your finger remains attached to the screen you can sample as many tracks as you like, but as soon as you lift the finger the app takes you back to your initial list of playlists or albums, allowing you to continue to navigate.

So, if you ever clicked on a workout playlist and then found out that it was a dud halfway through or if you’d like to sample new music but cuing up all the latest releases seems like a bit of a chore, from today you can sample what’s on offer thanks to “Touch Preview”.

The feature will roll out to other devices in due course. For now, it is an impressive addition to Spotify’s mobile experience and shows that the company is continuing to develop its product to make it more user-friendly and to respond to the needs of its audience.

The company recently experienced a boost in subscribers - partly thanks to the 99 cents offer over the holiday period. “Touch Preview” may be just the one more reason those users need to stick with the service as regular subscribers after the offer ends.
