Esteemed BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton quits after 10 years

Fearne Cotton (main picture), one of Britain’s most popular radio and TV music DJs, is quitting after 10 years at BBC Radio 1, the UK public broadcaster’s iconic youth-oriented national music radio network.

Cotton has a strong following of fans for her daily mid-morning shows (between 10am and 1pm) and has gained industry respect for Live Lounge, a regular feature that invites major music acts to perform acoustically live.

Live Lounge is both on Radio 1 and on the digital-radio version Radio 1Xtra. When Ed Sheeran, this year’s BRIT Award for Best British Male, appeared on Live Lounge on 24 February, more than 2 million fans tuned into the YouTube version of his performance.

Cotton’s last on-air show will be on 22 May, followed by her final live event at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend festival in Norwich on 23-24 May.

She will be replaced by Clara Amfo, currently the host of the weekly Official Chart show. Amfo will now take on the mid-morning programme as well the Live Lounge gig starting 25 May. She will also stay on at The Official Chart but stop working on the Weekend Breakfast Show on 1Xtra.

Cotton’s departure comes shortly after Zane Lowe, another highly regarded BBC Radio 1 DJ, quit after 12 years to join Apple, owner of iTunes, the iPhone and Beats Music, in Los Angeles.
