SXSW GO app embraces iBeacon technology and adds social networking feature

South by South West 2015 is fast approaching and the event has just unveiled an update to its SXSW Go mobile app that will see the largest ever deployment of iBeacons at an event as well as a new social networking feature.

In order to pull this off SXSW has expanded its partnership with Eventbase and has also made its first investment in the company.

SXSW Go will now deliver attendees a highly contextualised experience  thanks to  the 'Around Me' function, automatically letting them know what’s going on in the area surrounding the iBeacon they are closest to - concerts, conference sessions and parties around town.

The app will also allow users to network smarter thanks to 'Attendee Matching', surfacing people nearby who have similar interests and letting them know if the people they have flagged on the event’s database are nearby.

Given the sheer amount of people that attend the festival this could help attendees reduce the amount of time spent chatting to people with whom - quite frankly - they have absolutely nothing in common.

Finally, the app has expanded on its SessionLive feature that allows attendees to join discussions with others and to participate in real-time audience polls.

With all these new additions to the app, one has to hope that attendees will actually take the time to put their mobile phones away and enjoy everything the event has to offer.
