Google Play’s partnership with the BRITs raises £250k for charity

Google Play has raised £250k so far for charities War Child and The BRIT Trust following its partnership with the BRIT Awards, Music Week reports.

The digital music service is the official streaming partner of the BRITs and has been making a donation for each free stream/download of the live performances by Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Royal Blood, Take That and Paloma Faith.

The free downloads promotion ended last night, but from today the tracks are going to be on sale exclusively on the Google Play platform until the 27th of March, with the proceeds still going to charity.

Geoff Taylor, the chief executive of the BRIT Awards, stated that the money raised will make a huge difference to War Child and to the music education work of the BRIT Trust.

In terms of viewership the BRITs recovered after a rather poor performance last year, jumping from 4.6 million to 5.8. This may also have something to do with the fact that the awards were being presented by Ant and Dec - the most popular presenting duo on UK television - which could have led a few more non-music people who follow their programs to tune in.
