Streaming service WiMP to be rebranded as TIDAL

Things are moving fast for Aspiro, the company acquired by Jay-Z’s Project Panther Bidco that is home to the music streaming services WiMP and Tidal.

Yesterday - just a few days after the acquisition was approved by shareholders - it was announced that WiMP will be rebranded as Tidal, a move that makes sense as it consolidates the brand internationally.

This may come as a bit of a shock to WiMP users who have been subscribing to the service for years. WiMP has been around since 2010 and up until the end of January counted 71,000 paying subscribers and 391,000 users who subscribed through partner companies. There is no news right now as to whether those partnerships will continue for the foreseeable future.

It is important to note that WiMP offered both a “standard” streaming service and a high quality one at a higher price, whilst Tidal only offers the high-quality option.

it will be interesting to see whether Jay-Z plans on keeping the US version of the service confined to the small but more profitable high-quality segment or whether he will directly challenge Spotify and the upcoming Apple service at the $9.99 price point with a non-high-res offering.
