Beatport’s streaming service launches iOS and Android apps

Beatport has released brand new iOS and Android apps for its music streaming service offering, making it accessible on the go for the first time. The apps are available internationally and are free to use, with no option to pay or upgrade.

The company’s transition to streaming is a necessity, given that the market for MP3 downloads is declining quickly and users may be turning to mainstream services like Spotify and Rdio for their subscription music fix.

At the same time one has to wonder as to why the company is not offering a premium option, it seems to be a strange strategy give that there surely is a small proportion of Beatport users who would be willing to pay for the service right from start.

Beatport has the advantage of having strong relationships with EDM labels around the world. Many of those labels still rely heavily on sales (both physical and digital) and may have been reluctant to releasing their music on traditional streaming services. Since the service is currently free to access it would be interesting to know how much Beatport is paying per stream to those labels.

The company also included a “Shows” tab, which is powered by a partnership with Bandsintown and provides users with a full concert calendar of their favourite electronic music acts.

The new iOS and Android apps have become part of T-Mobile’s Music Freedom ecosystem, which now includes the majority of legal streaming services and allows users to stream music without that data being counted towards their monthly caps.
