Artists get behind #TIDALforall campaign as service re-launches today

Talk about fast work. Jay-Z has only just got his hands on Aspiro, the company that owns streaming music service TIDAL, and he is already re-launching the service with a huge show of support from fellow music stars Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Deadmau5, Coldplay, Diddy and more (see tweets below).

The #TIDALforall campaign is pushing people to support the service by changing their twitter picture to a light blue colour. The hashtag has gone viral, but many people on Twitter are wondering what the service is (since it's the first they hear of it) and are questioning the $19.99 price point for the high-quality service.

Perhaps the biggest development for TIDAL is the fact that whilst until last week the service only had a high-quality tier priced at $19.99 per month, now it is in direct competition with Spotify offering a $9.99 tier that offers standard quality audio. The same is true for the UK, where the service will have a £19.99 and a £9.99 tier. The site currently features a countdown clock with 13 hours left on it, presumably to mark the official press conference for the re-launch, although since it is already possible to sign up for the service the countdown is a little confusing.

This is a bold move for Jay-Z and it is going to be intresting to see how Spotify reacts to this huge show of support for a rival music service given that the company has paid these artists substantial checks, especially over the past couple of years. Also, how are labels going to react to this? We'll be watching this developing story and any comments from industry players over the coming days.
