Omnifone announces MusicStation cloud solution and partnership with Samsung

Omnifone unveiled its new music cloud platform called MusicStation. The new system was created from the ground up to offer the greatest possible flexibility and scale to developers looking to make use of the company’s B2B services.

Omnifone also announced a new partnership with Samsung and will power its Milk Music internet radio service in New Zealand and Australia. Samsung is one of the first users of MusicStation and the electronics giant will leverage not only Omnifone’s technology but also its expertise as the stations will be curated by Omnifone’s in-house musicologists.

The Milk app will still feature the navigation dial interface available in its US iteration and which has made it stand out from the crowd.

Milk Music is currently powered by Slacker Radio in the USA. Samsung probably chose to partner with Omnifone due to Slacker lacking international licenses, but if MusicStation proves to be a satisfying option and Samsung decides to further expand Milk Music internationally, the electronics company could become an key new client for Omnifone after the loss of Sony Music Unlimited (Sony decided to pull the plug on the service and partner with Spotify instead) and Blackberry’s BBM Music.

The CEO of Omnifone Jeff Hughes stated: “We are delighted to support Samsung in the first launch of its Milk Music service New Zealand and Australia. Samsung has triumphed in bringing a high quality radio streaming service to consumers via its top selling devices. With support from our unmatched music cloud, Samsung can continue to attract more users and rapidly gain an advantage in the global streaming market.”

It will be interesting to see if the new infrastructure created by Omnifone can attract not only large companies like Samsung but also startups, that will depend largely on the flexibility of the system and on its costs.
