MIDEM announces new Deezer CEO as keynote speaker

Deezer and the music industry conference MIDEM have always had a close relationship, going back to when the streaming service had just launched as a licensed offering, so it’s only natural to see the new CEO of the company Hans-Holger Albrecht take centre stage in Cannes this june to deliver his first keynote (in the form of a 30-minute Q&A session) since his appointment to the role.

Deezer has grown to become one of the biggest music streaming services in the world - with six million paid subscribers and sixteen million active users - and is certainly the service with the biggest global footprint as it’s available in 180 countries.

Commenting on the keynote announcement Albrecht said: “Streaming is revolutionising the industry, transforming the way we all discover and enjoy music, and nowhere will this trend be highlighted more clearly than at Midem 2015. It’s been a thrilling time to join Deezer, a pioneer of audio streaming, as its global user base of 16 million people continues to grow apace. There are big challenges and even bigger opportunities on the horizon for the company and the streaming market as a whole, and I’m looking forward to sharing Deezer’s plans for evolution in June.”

Recently, the company finally launched in the USA - via its Deezer Elite product and an exclusive partnership with SONOS - so it will be interesting to hear what Albrecht will have to say about the potential to take on the North American market.

Unfortunately the keynote will be just a couple of days before WWDC - where Apple is slated to unveil its streaming service - so it won’t be a chance to hear Albrecht’s first reaction to the launch, but the issue of competition in general is likely to be addressed regardless.

Bruno Crolot, Director of Music Markets at Reed MIDEM, stated: “We are delighted to welcome Hans-Holger Albrecht as keynote speaker, and honoured that he chose Midem as his first public speaking appearance as the new CEO of Deezer. I trust his fresh eye and extended business insights on a key topic such as streaming will be invaluable for the Midem audience of industry professionals.”

MIDEM takes place between on June 5-8 in Cannes, it will be the first 'summer' edition of a conference that traditionally takes place in January.
