German streaming service Simfy shuts down

German music streaming service Simfy announced it would be shutting down in an email to users sent on the 1st of May, news website Grunderszene reports.

The shutdown came as a surprise to users and apparently many of them have taken to  the company's Facebook page to complain as some have already paid for several months’ worth of service in advance.

To make matters even more opaque, apparently Simfy AG had already been dissolved on the 26th of March on the German equivalent of UK’s Companies house.

Simfy had already lost its license deal with Warner Music this February and was on the verge of losing the licenses with Sony Music and Universal as well.

The company appears to have reached an agreement with Deezer so that new potential subscribers will be directed to the French music subscription service, whilst existing subscribers will be switched to Deezer automatically.

Simfy was founded in 2006 in Cologne, Germany. It raised its latest reported round of funding in May 2011. Christoph Lange and Steffen Wicker were the last two founders to leave the company in December 2012.
