Prince releases “Stare” on Spotify, acknowledging the promotional value of the service

Prince may have pulled his catalogue from all streaming services aside from Tidal just a few weeks ago, but that is no reason for him to shy away from a good promotional opportunity.

The ever-popular artist has taken the music world by surprise by releasing a new track - “Stare” - on Spotify.

The funky number is being heavily featured in the “New Releases” section on the streaming service and is receiving substantial attention from the press precisely due to the inconsistency of his stance on streaming services.

It is telling that Prince decided to grant this exclusive to Spotify rather than Tidal, and that is possibly due to the breadth of the former’s user base. This reinforces the idea that Spotify is a great platform to promote music on, although the artist clearly has mixed feelings about whether streaming provides adequate monetary returns.

In that sense it may also be that Prince - who releases music through his own label NPG - is trying to figure out exactly how much money he can make from a single track on Spotify and is using this release as an experiment to see if it would be worth releasing his album HITRUN - due for release later this year - on streaming services.
