Justin Bieber sets Spotify record with "What Do You Mean?"

Justin Bieber's new single "What Do You Mean?" is already setting records just after a week from its release.

Spotify said Thursday (September 3) that Bieber's "What Do You Mean?" was streamed more than 21 million times in just five days. The song sets a new record in the U.S. and globally, and surpassed the 20 million streams that One Direction's "Drag Me Down" launched in its debut week. At the beginning of August, One Direction broke the Spotify record for one-day streams with their new single, which was played on the music platform 20 million times in its opening week.

This great news comes just days after Bieber performed the song for the first time at the MTV Video Music Awards. During an interview with Jimmy Fallon during the "Tonight Show", the singer confessed that he broke down after singing the track on stage because he was overwhelmed:

It was just so overwhelming for me - everything, just the performance. I just wasn't expecting them to support me in the way they did. The last time I was at an awards show, I was booed. I think it's just like I've worked so hard at this album and at becoming the man I want to become, and then stepping into situations, you just can't help but feel judged.

So I was just feeling judged and wanting to win so badly, and wanting to do what I love so badly that I just put everything on the line. And I think that that was what was so special about the emotional moment at the end, that it was authentic. It was real. I was really just wanting it so bad.

Justin Bieber's yet-untitled new album will be released on November 13.
