US: digital song sales at their lowest in 7 years, while streaming keeps on growing

According to Nielsen Music, digital song sales in the US - in the week ending on August 27 - have been the lowest in nearly eight years, with 15.66 million items sold. This is the smallest weekly sum for song downloads since the week ending Dec. 9, 2007, when 15.64 million were sold.

On the other hand, streaming continues to grow: in the same week, it scored its highest total US on-demand audio and video streams, with 6.6 billion. This clearly shows how users are opting for free and low-cost streaming services (such as Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music), leaving the pay-to-own model.

The most-streamed song of that week was Silento's "Watch Me," with 22.3 million. The total streams of 2015, to date, amounts to 191.4 billion - up 100 percent compared to the same time frame a year ago (95.8 billion).
