Drake may have missed out on U.S. n.1 spot due to Apple Music deal

Drake is one of the hottest artists on the planet right now, but believe it or not he has yet to reach the n.1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

His latest single “Hotline Bling” could have been the track to take him there, however The Weeknd managed to hold on to the top spot for a sixth consecutive week with “The Hills”.

If you’ve been at all on Twitter or Facebook this week, it was almost impossible to escape GIFs of Drake dancing in the “Hotline Bling” video (see below). So what gives?

The Verge reports that Drake may have missed out on the top spot due to a deal with Apple, which meant that his video was only available to view via Apple Music.

Apple does not report its video views to Nielsen Soundscan, which means that a substantial number of video streams won’t have been counted towards the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This could have been enough to keep Drake off the top spot.

The artist is unlikely to get another shot with this track, since Adele’s “Hello” will inevitably get to n.1 next week and probably remain there for quite some time.

In these exclusives there are always trade-offs and Drake obviously would have gotten a decent chunk of cash for it, but Apple may want to re-visit its stance on reporting to Nielsen since other artists may think twice about making the same mistake: after all the lure of a N.1 hit - regardless of the number of people saying charts are less meaningful - is still strong.
