Amazon’s share of non-digital entertainment slips in the UK

Amazon’s share of non-digital entertainment has fallen by 1.2% to 20.4% in the UK, according to figures published by Kantar Worldpanel and first reported by The Guardian

The UK high street is finally fighting back after years of decline, grabbing 68.4% of all physical sales of CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays and - especially - games. Physical retailers HMV, Game and Argos all increased their market share.

This is partly due to the performance of game releases, which fare very well on the high street, but could also be a result of Amazon’s recent deliberate focus on its Prime Music and Prime Video features. These services, together with the company’s doubling down on TV-related hardware, make it less likely for Amazon customers to be browsing through the CD or DVD sections.

Retailers are fighting back, but the fall in CD and DVD sales means that they may be gaining a bigger slice of a fast-shringking market - which doesn't bode too well for their future. Still, the upcoming Christmas sales boost, which will include the release of Adele's new record, should ensure physical stores will register a positive last quarter in 2015.
