Adele approaches 3m albums sold in the US, Alabama Shakes feel the Apple effect

Lots of Adele-related news as the singer is close to approaching the never-before-seen figure of 3 million albums sold in the US in a week - blowing way past NSYNC’s record and leaving the mouths of many hardened record executives agape, wondering what they have been missing all these years.

In the UK, Adele may well blow past the record held by Oasis with “Be Here Now”, as by Tuesday she’d reached 538k in sales, and needed to add just another 160k to reach the milestone.

To put this in perspective, in August 2012 Rihanna needed just 9,578 album sales to reach the top spot in the UK Chart. In other words, Adele is reaching figures that were unthinkable after the general decline of the record industry post-Napster.

Aside from Adele however, an interesting story is developing with Alabama Shakes as the title track of their album “Sound & Color” has been picked up by Apple for the new iPad Pro advert. The song following this sync has popped up in multiple Billboard rock charts and received a huge bump both in terms of sales and streams.

The song has not been a single yet, so the band’s label may well jump on this opportunity to squeeze a few more sales and generate new interest in the album in time for Christmas. “Sound & Color” (the album) is currently at n.95 of the Billboard 200 albums chart.
