Adele “25” web searches dominated by Lyrics

Adele “25” web searches dominated by Lyrics

Lyrics company Musixmatch has analysed the search trends for ‘adele 25 lyrics’, ‘adele 25 torrent’ and ‘adele 25 youtube’ using Google Trends.

In the process, the company discovered that on the day of release of the album the search volume for the album’s lyrics was twice as high as that for its torrents or the YouTube versions.

When looking at the two months before the release, it is clear that there is a spike in search activity for both lyrics and YouTube - this happened for the first single “Hello”, released on October 23rd, however MusixMatch’s research shows that lyrics came out on top overall.

Another interesting observation is that whilst the torrent searches on the day of the release of “Hello” were minimal compared to those for lyrics or YouTube, they spiked on the day of release of the album.

There isn’t a ’scientific’ explanation for the phenomenon, however it seems clear that there is a correlation between the availability of material on streaming services and the volume of torrent searches. “Hello” was made available everywhere at the same time, whilst “25” is only available to purchase as a download or a traditional CD.

Musixmatch - as one of the leading lyrics services worldwide - has analysed the engagement of its users with Adele’s lyrics both within its app and on its website. From the 19th to the 22nd of November, the company tracked a total engagement of 4,365 hours, this is time purely spent by its users reading Adele lyrics.

During the four days of the study, it seems clear that users are drawn to the songs for which a video has been released. “Hello” accounts for the vast majority of time spent ‘engaging’ with Adele’s lyrics, followed by “While We Were Young”.

The disproportionate engagement with “Hello” compared to other tracks may be explained by the fact that the track is being played frequently on almost all pop radio stations worldwide, but it could also be linked to the fact that a good proportion of the ‘casual’ and digital-savvy Adele fans who have Musixmatch’s app installed may only have access to the songs that are available on either Spotify or YouTube.
