Spotify is the world’s most popular music streaming app, Pandora slips to 2nd place

Unsurprisingly Spotify has grabbed the top spot in App Annie’s list of the most popular music streaming apps in the world.

Spotify has overtaken Pandora - this was predictable in that Pandora’s potential user base is confined to the U.S., Australia and New Zealand whilst Spotify is growing by leaps and bounds internationally.

SoundCloud ranks third in the list of most popular apps - another reminder that in spite of the current legal issues with the PRS and the difficulties in getting a legal music service off the ground the company is still a force to be reckoned with.

When it comes to revenues generated of course it is a different story. Here the n.1 and n.2 spots are still being held by Spotify and Pandora respectively - however SoundCloud is nowhere to be seen. At n.3 is Deezer, followed by Beats music, and much to the surprise of detractors everywhere - Tidal is sitting pretty an n.5, beating Rhapsody and the now-defunct Rdio at n.7. This data presumably only takes into account the revenues generated by the in-app purchase of subscriptions, and so it is bound to be influenced by how much the company itself pushed that feature within the app (thus agreeing to give a chunk of its revenues to Apple).

The research conducted by App Annie shows that Spotify’s prominence may increase as the company leads downloads in emerging markets where there is still plenty of room to grow.
