So long, Songza: the company disappears in the belly of Google

Songza has revealed to its 5.5 million users that the company will stop operations by the end of January, integrating fully into Google.

Songza was acquired by Google in July 2014 and so it has had a very good run post-acquisition, but the time has come for the service to fully integrate with Google Play Music. This is a foreseeable development as the company’s key service was music curation, and that made it difficult for it to become a staple of the Google experience whilst maintaining its own branding. In addition, Google already has a few problems of its own creating a cohesive, coherent music experience across its Google Play Music and YouTube properties without having to think about strange offshoots like Sogza.

The company wrote in a blog post: “It’s now time for us to focus on building a single, cohesive product. So as of January 31, 2016, Songza will become Google Play Music, and you will no longer be able to access Songza.com or the Songza mobile apps. HEY! There’s no crying! Are you crying? There’s no crying in music streaming! Moving to Google Play Music is free, and your favorite playlists can come with you! Pinky swear.

The company also linked to a super-awkward video where the founders explain the changes in person.
