Rock Band is developing a VR version with Oculus Rift

Rock Band fans, rejoice: next year you’ll be able to play the game in a virtual reality environment via the Oculus Rift.

The announcement was made by Palmer Luckey - Oculus VR’s founder - at The Game Awards in LA. Luckey stated: “… seeing your drummer on the left, seeing a guitarist on your right, wailing out on a guitar solo and just looking out at the crowd and just feeling like you really are a rock star, it’s an incredible experience.”

The two companies have been collaborating on the release for some time, and Harmonix is already dabbling in VR tech as it announced the release of Harmonix Music VR for Sony’s playstation VR system.

Oculus fans are now able to get their hands on the first device that has ever been mass-produced by the company - the Gear VR - produced in partnership with Samsung and requiring the latest Samsung smartphone to function.

However, it sounds as if Rock Band fans will have to wait for the release fo the Oculus Rift - the company’s first all-inclusive, dedicated VR device - that will debut sometime in Q1 of 2016. The cross compatibility of VR games and environments between the Rift and the Gear VR is unclear.
