Apple Music reaches 10 million subscribers, but Spotify is still ahead

Apple Music has surpassed 10 million paying subscribers according to a report by the Financial Times, this represents a big jump from the 6.5 million reported by Apple’s CEO Tim Cook in October 2015.

Spotify on the other hand revealed in June 2015 it had reached 20 million subscribers. The question on everyone’s mind now is: can the growth rate shown by Apple Music - 3.5 million new subs in less than 3 months - mean that the company will become the biggest streaming service within 12 to 18 months?

Not so fast, says Spotify. A spokesperson of the company did not elaborate on growth rates but did state that the second half of 2015 was the company’s fastest subscriber growth ever.

Spotify had added 5 million paying subscribers between December and June 2015. If the company is now adding premium subscribers at an even faster rate, it could easily be matching Apple Music’s growth, making it very difficult for Apple’s service to catch up to Spotify at least in the short to medium term.

Regardless of the competition, the FT's report is good news for Apple Music, since service has often been subject of headlines implying that it was not working, that users hated it/were leaving it in droves, or that it was simply a mistake. Aside from the question marks on the user-friendliness of the app, the fact that Apple Music seamlessly integrates the music users have purchased over the years to the streaming collection continues to be a major plus for iTunes users everywhere.
