Spotify unveils partnership with Genius to present fact-filled playlists

Remember the good old days when music video channels added fun facts and information about the song and the artist to music videos as an overlay? 

Spotify is applying the concept to music streaming through a partnership with Genius, unveiling a series of new “Behind The Lyrics” playlists - the first being Behind the Lyrics (Hip Hop). 

These playlists provide the listener, as the song progresses, with facts, explanations to obscure lyrics, quotes and more: some of the content is provided by the artists themselves and the rest is part of the database of “verified” comments made by Genius’ users.

The feature is now available to iPhone users (iPhone 5 and newer). 

Diplo, commenting on the new feature, stated: “Being a producer and writer, I really love to see how some songs resonate with fans from the feeling / meaning or just sound of the records. I have always been a person that dissects music and studies it. I was a sample spotter and I learned how to make music by listening to it. Genius and Spotify are working together to break down music to the bare bones and get deeper into its true core.”

Spotify has stated that Musixmatch remains its lyrics provider of choice, and that the partnership with Genius is purely complementary. The new "Behind The Lyrics" playlists will become available cross-platform over the coming weeks.
