Bruce Springsteen covers "Rebel Rebel" to homage David Bowie - VIDEO

The Boss - Bruce Springsteen - just kicked off his US tour with the E Street Band in Pittsburgh, on Saturday January 16. The tour celebrates his recently reissued album "The River" (which turned 35) and in each gig the band performs the album in full... but during the very first date Springsteen chose to offer a little change of program to his fans, playing a cover of David Bowie's classic "Rebel Rebel" during the encores.

At the beginning of the encores section, right before launching into a rendition of the song taken from "Diamond Dogs", Springsteen explained:

We’re gonna take a moment and note the passing of our good friend David Bowie. Not enough people know it but he recorded our music way, way, way back in the very beginning, 1973. He rang me up and I visited him down in Philly while he was making the "Young Americans" record. He covered some of my music, ‘It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City,’ ‘Growin’ Up,’ and he was a big supporter of ours. I took the Greyhound bus down to Philadelphia, that’s how early on it was. Anyway, we’re thinking of him.
