Starbucks furthers Spotify partnership with discovery function

Starbucks is deepening its partnership with Spotify - announced in May 2015 - by adding a way for its customers to track what music is being played in each of its stores.

The new function is built into Starbucks' iOS and Android app, and allows customers to tap into the store’s “feed” to see what track is currently being played by the store's Spotify account. Customers can like the song and even save it to a Spotify playlist on their own account.

The function is rolling out to 7,500 stores across the U.S. - Starbucks has not extended its partnership with Spotify to other territories as of yet, probably due to licensing restrictions.

In addition, within the app Starbucks has created a section highlighting new and emerging artists and showcasing some of the store’s most popular music from the past two decades as playlists, which can also be saved to a user's Spotify account.

This could prove a good move for both companies, as Starbucks will continue to maintain its tech “edge” and Spotify is will be exposed to a whole new audience that may well end up giving the service a go.

In-store music is a huge business, and if Spotify can show that it is cost effective and that it can provide a superior user experience, it stands to grab a slice of this valuable market.
