Midem announces first keynote speakers, a focus on the internationalisation of the music business

Midem has announced the first keynotes for its 2016 event.

First is Gao Xiaosong, the Chairman of the Alibaba Music Group. He commented: “I am thrilled to choose Midem for my first international speaking appearance as Chairman of Alibaba Music Group. I can’t wait to share with its audience the cultural features of East Asian music markets such as China, and explore how record labels from Western countries need, among others, to differentiate music fans from idol fans when expanding their international strategy into these markets.”

Xiaosong is not simply an executive, he was a singer and a songwriter before founding the independent label Rye Music and serving as MD at Hengda Music.

The second keynote speaker is Neil Warnock, Head of Music Worldwide at United Talent Agency UTA. Warnock will speak on the evolving of the agent in an artist’s career, sharing his vision on the shifting role between labels and agents when it comes to artist development. He stated: “The opportunities presented by the internationalisation of the music business are huge. Thanks to digital tools, fans are everywhere and it has become key for artists and their teams to have an international strategy. I am very excited to be speaking at Midem as it is a great opportunity to meet key players from around the world in a single place.”

The third keynote speaker announced is Mary Ramos, award-winning music supervisor who has worked on Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”, “Inglorious Bastards”, “Kill Bill” as well as the current “The Hateful Eight”. Ramos said:  “I am pleased to participate in Midem 2016 and share my vision on the business today and what are the creative and commercial considerations involved in programming the music for Tarantino’s movies.”

Jérôme Delhaye, Director of the Entertainment Division at Reed MIDEM, states that this year’s conference will have a strong focus on the internationalisation of the music business, which makes the three speakers selected a good fit.

The conference will be taking place between the 3rd and 6th of June 2016 in Cannes, France.
