Google Play Music jumps on the podcast train

Podcasts are the new go-to feature for streaming services in 2016. Deezer got the ball rolling, Spotify added them just last week and now Google Play Music has started rolling out podcasts to a restricted number of users - possibly a beta test before wider rollout in the coming weeks.

The imminent launch of a Google Play podcast feature was “leaked” by podcaster Bill Simmons in a tweet.

Google Play Music's podcast implementation appears to have a similar feature set to many other, and includes the ability to automatically download new episodes. It is as of yet unclear how extensive Google Play’s catalogue is. Spotify appears to have selected a restricted number of shows for its app at least in its initial launch phase.

Whilst there is clearly a podcast 'frenzy', real innovation in this space will only come in time, as services figure out how to integrate music listening with on-demand spoken word content like podcasts, finally creating what listeners have been promised all along: a truly personalised radio experience.
