BBC Music app release announced (but it is not live yet)

The BBC yesterday morning announced the release of the BBC Music app for iOS and Android, fulfilling plans announced in late 2015.

However, the app has yet to materialise on the iTunes and on the Google Play stores and it is unclear when it will actually be released (Rockol was hoping to include a first look of the app with this news item but that is impossible at the moment).

The app is optimised for both smartphones and tablets, enabling users to receive recommendations based on the BBC’s programming and their personal preferences, as well as recommending playlists created by DJs such as Annie Mac and Lauren Laverne.

The BBC is leveraging its vast radio and television archives, and will obviously also feature the latest content recorded and made available via the BBC.

Much of the content available on the app (especially recent one) is already available in one form or another on the iPlayer or the iPlayer radio app, but seeing it all in the same place makes a difference, and could cement the BBC’s already impressive role as a tastemaker and a place to break new artists.

The company is not claiming to be replacing streaming services, and in fact, the playlists it provides are limited in playback to a sample and can be exported to Spotify, Deezer or YouTube for full playback.
