Discogs launches its offical iPhone app for record collectors

After a few months of beta testing, popular music database and market website Discogs officially launched its own iOS app.
The app was released on February 29, with a focus on the service's collection and want list function - but with more sorting and filtering options in development. According to an official statement, the app will be ever evolving around the Discog community's feedback.

The software currently includes a barcode scanner (to quickly find a release using the iPhone camera). In the future, it will also make improvements to discography filtering and sorting, offline functions and Discogs marketplace integration.Discogs also aims to keep track of the releases you’d like to own, making sure you’re aware of their availability on its marketplace.

Finally the app, as the largest database of physical releases, includes a discovery component to help users find more music they'll love. This has become a bigger part of Discog’s strategy over the past couple of years.

According to the announcement, Discogs is also investigating album cover image search technology, integration with the company's VinylHub service and more.

The app currently is available for free download here. It requires mandatory sign-in, which makes it a bit fiddly for new users of the service. However, Discogs on mobile is a no-brainer and it is easy to see existing users flocking to download it.

Discog’s marketplace is now the music equivalent of abebooks.com. It offers close to 20 million vinyl records, close to 6 million CDs as well as hundreds of thousands of Cassettes, CD-Rs and DVDs.
