Kanye West bids farewell to CDs

Kanye West has decided to abandon the CD altogether, stating on Twitter that he will never release another album in that format.

Reading between the lines of his tweets, it is also unclear whether West is interested in making music available as a download to purchase online ever again, since he specifically mentions streaming as his release format of choice.

One would have thought that West may have been a little less thrilled with streaming this week, considering that Tidal’s failure to come to an agreement with Nielsen Soundscan on how to report streams generated on the platform resulted in his latest album “The Life of Pablo” not charting at all on the Billboard 200.

CD sales may be declining, but they are still a major source of revenues especially for high-profile artists like Kanye West. The lack of a CD release is especially damaging in countries like Germany and Japan, where physical album sales still represent the largest piece of the revenues pie.
