Kanye sued over claim that “The Life of Pablo” would never ever be available outside of Tidal

When Kanye West released “The Life of Pablo”, he made it very clear on social media that the album would never, ever be available outside of Tidal.

This prompted his fans to flock the the service, only to discover a few weeks later that West did not really mean what he wrote and that his album was going to become available everywhere else as well.

Now Variety reports that a lawsuit seeking class action status has been filed in a San Francisco court, accusing West of deceiving his fans, tricking them into boosting the number of Tidal subscribers and into providing the service with all their data including credit card numbers and social media information.

The lawsuit claims that West never intended for the album to be an exclusive and seeks the recovery of any subscription fees collected as a result of the stunt. In addition, the claimant wants to see an end to the practice that sees services convert free trial into paying subscriptions unless the user remembers to cancel them. This is a wider issue for the online subscription industry and any ruling against the practice would be major news.

It is unclear whether as currently formulated the suit has legs, and Tidal is yet to comment on the matter.
