YouTube Red launches $1 deal for three months of subscription in the US

YouTube seems finally ready to push its subscriptions service YouTube Red in a big way. The company this week introduced as special offer that will enable users to become premium subscribers for three months for just $1 (US only).

YouTube Red enables user to cache YouTube content for offline playback, access to a premium library which also includes original shows, and of course access to the Google Play Music All Access streaming service.

The company’s commitment to the service has been questioned in recent months since the launch - which itself came over a year after the first tests on a premium service - seemed to be a rather subdued affair.

The apparent lack of commitment, coupled with recent numbers around how much YouTube is paying the music industry, has contributed to a surge of complaints coming from all sides of the music industry around YouTube needing to change the its attitude towards music and start paying a fair rate towards streams.

As things stand, the only way for the industry to see a significant growth in royalties coming from YouTube is if YouTube Red really takes off.
