Alicia Keys at Apple Music Festival - LIVE REVIEW

Alicia Keys at Apple Music Festival - LIVE REVIEW

Alicia Keys is making pretty clear that she loves New York. Her set at the Apple Music Festival opens with a solid 10 minutes classi hip hop DJ set, that bring everyone intoNetflix’s ‘The Get Down’ mood. She wants to honours her roots, celebrate Brooklyn, Harlem and Bronx.

When she did finally get going, she stopped the opener halfway through and re-started “so you can hear every word I say”.

With more than 30m albums sold, 14 Grammy Awards and 4 albums since the last one she has successfully re-invented herself and she keeps constantly evolving. Alicia is the real deal. And she doesn’t need much to prove this. A stripped-back stage, with nothing but the band, good vibes and groove but this is enough for Alicia to deliver a high-energy show, in which nothing is choreographed to the minutest detail.

Fans who are waiting for new catch a breath of fresh air when Keys shares a little insight into what to expect of the album and it will feature her favourite city: “It’s all about New York, I just wanna bring you into my world a little bit. The people, the sounds. Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Harlem. I wanna give you a little taste.” She reassures the fan that new music is coming soon, in fact “it’s coming real soon”, she promise. “It’s the most intentional, purposeful music, I’ve ever written”.

Alicia vibes with the Roundhouse crowd as if she was having a jamming session with friends. In fact she brings Samph on stage. They duets on “Un-thinkable (I'm ready)” and she leaves some space for Sampha to perform his latest track “Blood on me”. Everything is simply stunning, but some of the best moments are the most intimate, when it's just Keys, her spine-tingling vocals and her beautiful piano playing.
